Weddings in Yucatán: a guide to planning an intimate wedding

When to marry, legal or symbolic ceremony, how to choose the venue and ideas for an intimate jungle wedding. Everything to plan your wedding in Yucatán.

More and more couples are choosing Yucatán for their wedding. It’s easy to see why: jungle, cenotes, towns full of history, wonderful food and a climate made for celebrating outdoors.

If you’re just starting to plan your wedding in Yucatán, here’s what we wish we’d known from the start: when to get married, which kind of wedding to choose, how the legal side works and what to look for in a venue.

Why get married in Yucatán?

  • It’s different. No banquet halls: here your wedding can take place in the middle of the jungle, under the stars.
  • It’s easy to get there. Mérida has an international airport with direct flights from several cities in Mexico and the United States.
  • The food is in a league of its own. Yucatecan cuisine is among the richest in Mexico.
  • Your guests get to enjoy a trip. Before or after the wedding, they can explore cenotes, Pueblos Mágicos and Maya sites.

Intimate wedding or elopement: which one is right for you?

An intimate wedding is a celebration with just a few people — the ones who truly matter. Instead of 300 guests, think 30 or 50. That changes everything: there’s time to talk with each guest, the food can be cooked by a chef and your budget goes much further.

An elopement is even smaller: just the two of you, or a handful of people. It’s very popular with couples who want something personal, without the pressure of a big wedding. Many combine it with their honeymoon.

The best time to get married in Yucatán

  • November through March: the best season. It’s less hot, there’s little rain and the nights are cool — perfect for dinner outdoors.
  • April and May: the hottest months. If you marry then, a sunset ceremony is best.
  • June through October: rainy season, and June to November is hurricane season. It’s doable, but you’ll need an indoor plan B.

A tip: December and Easter dates get booked far in advance. If you have a date in mind, ask about it as soon as possible.

Legal or symbolic wedding in Mexico

There are two paths:

  • Civil wedding: the legally binding one. It’s processed through the Civil Registry and requires documents in advance. If either of you is a foreigner, there are more requirements, so start early.
  • Symbolic wedding: not legally binding, but full of emotion. Many couples, especially those coming from abroad, marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here, their way and without paperwork.

In a symbolic ceremony you can write your own vows, ask a friend to officiate or include a Maya ceremony.

How to choose your wedding venue in Yucatán

Before falling in love with the photos, ask these questions:

  • Is the venue just for us? For an intimate wedding, having the whole place to yourselves makes all the difference.
  • Is there accommodation for our guests? If everyone stays on site, no one drives at night and the party becomes a weekend together.
  • What’s the food like? Ask whether the menu is tailor-made and who cooks it.
  • Is there a Plan B if it rains? Especially from June through October.
  • How far is it from Mérida and the airport? Your guests will appreciate it.
  • How many people can fit? The venue should feel full, neither empty nor cramped.

Ideas for a wedding in the Yucatecan jungle

  • A sunset ceremony, when the heat drops and the light turns golden.
  • A long table under the stars instead of round tables: everyone together, like a dinner among friends.
  • A chef’s menu featuring local ingredients.
  • A bonfire after dinner, to close the night slowly.
  • A cenote day with your guests before or after the wedding. Here’s our guide to the best cenotes near Mérida.

Weddings in Yucatán: frequently asked questions

When is the best time to get married in Yucatán?

From November to March. It’s cooler, there’s little rain, and the nights are cool.

What is an elopement?

It’s a very small wedding—just the couple or a few people. It’s more personal, more relaxed, and can be combined with the honeymoon.

Can a foreigner get married in Yucatán?

Yes. The civil wedding is processed through the Civil Registry and requires more documents. Many foreign couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic wedding here.

How many guests can attend an intimate wedding?

There’s no fixed number, but usually between 10 and 60 people. At Galopina we welcome up to 60 guests.

How much does a wedding in Yucatán cost?

It depends a lot on the venue, the number of guests and what’s included. With an intimate wedding your budget goes further, because you invest in fewer people and a better experience.

Are there any cenotes nearby that guests can visit?

Yes. Galopina is inside the Ring of Cenotes, with rustic cenotes like Noh Mozón, Su-Hem and Nah-Yah a short drive away. A cenote day before or after the wedding is a great plan for everyone, and we can organize the visit with a guide who specializes in them.
